Multi-Use Performing Arts, Events, & Conference Centre Financial Feasibility Study
The need to assess the viability of a large, multi-use venue in Burnaby, British Columbia, prompted the City to hire Hunden Partners. Hunden’s in-depth, high-level analysis of hospitality and tourism infrastructure informed the City of Burnaby’s evaluation of opportunities for a multi-use venue within the framework of redevelopment.
Situation
Hunden Partners was engaged by the City of Burnaby to assess market demand, project feasibility, and the economic impact of a proposed flexible performance, entertainment, conference, and event facility in Downtown Burnaby, British Columbia. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the viability of a large-scale, adaptable venue that could accommodate a variety of community and public-oriented events, including:
- Performing Arts,
- Conferences,
- Concerts,
- Trade Shows,
- Exhibits, and
- Celebrations and Festivals.
Approach
The Project included a proposed visual art gallery, exhibition space, and offices and meeting rooms for various community groups and organizations. Deliverables comprised a recommended facility program and projected development impacts based on market research, up to three building configurations, massing, and preliminary schematic design options, a preliminary business case for the development, and a high-level analysis of the hospitality and tourism infrastructure required to support the Project.
Impact
Following Hunden’s financial feasibility and market analysis, the City of Burnaby utilized the findings to inform continued evaluation of opportunities for a flexible performing arts and events venue within the broader Metrotown redevelopment framework. The feasibility study’s recommendations served as a foundation for ongoing, long-term planning by the City and its development partners.
